The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, decided to let go of his long beard for the duration of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. As the head of the region wrote in Telegramthis is not only a “sacred duty to the Motherland”, but also a “sacred jihad against Satanists.”

Ramzan Kadyrov recalled his dialogue with President Vladimir Putin before the meeting in Pyatigorsk on 19 May. Vladimir Putin asked the head of Chechnya about his beard: “Ramzan Akhmatovich, in my opinion, your beard has become even bigger, no? We have everything under control.” Then the journalists did not hear what the head of Chechnya answered the president. According to Ramzan Kadyrov, he replied: “Yes, I let her go a little.”

How told the head of Chechnya, already at another personal meeting, Vladimir Putin again joked about the beard. “I explained to our president that I let her go for the period of the special operation,” Ramzan Kadyrov wrote.

“However, our fighters also do this, because for us, as defenders, this is not only a duty to the Motherland, it is also a holy jihad against Satanists who encroach on religious values and traditional institutions of a healthy society,” the head of Chechnya believes.

In January, rumors appeared on Telegram channels about the introduction of a ban on wearing beards among Russian military personnel. Acting head of the DPR Denis Pushilin refuted this information. After that, a member of the State Duma Committee on Defense Viktor Sobolev declaredthat the ban on wearing beards by the military in the war zone is due to the need to monitor the appearance.

Ramzan Kadyrov, commenting on the statement of Deputy Sobolev, declaredthat he “knows perfectly well who wears a beard and why on the front line.” According to him, this is a “clear provocation” designed to “quench the morale of the soldiers” “who are in a holy war for the sake of the Almighty.” He stated that 99.9% of Chechen fighters have a beard, and “take care of it, wear it according to the Sunnah.”
