January 16 in the folk calendar is Gordeev’s day. According to folk signs, on this day you should take care of your health, including mental health.
In Rus’, there was a belief that on Gordeev’s Day, witches return from the Sabbath and are especially dangerous. Most of all, the owners of domestic animals were worried about their cows – they believed that witches could harm them. To protect animals, there were special rituals and conspiracies. For example, it was necessary to feed the cows with porridge with milk, carefully clean the barn, and keep its doors closed. Strangers were not allowed near the cows, especially during milking. They were wary of talking about evil spirits – so as not to attract it to themselves.
Also on this day, they turned to healers and healers, because it was believed that on this day they could save a person from any ailments, especially if they were caused by evil spirits.
Relatives and friends were treated to buns with poppy seeds and cottage cheese dishes – to attract prosperity and well-being.
It was impossible to boast on Gordeev’s day, brag about one’s successes, achievements, beauty, health, wealth and the like. It was believed that otherwise you can lose what you are talking about.
They tried not to wear new clothes that day – there was a sign that such clothes would quickly become unusable.
It was impossible to sweep and take out the garbage, so as not to take happiness and good luck out of the house with it.
They didn’t go on a long journey on Gordeev’s Day, especially if the road was unknown – they believed that on this day evil spirits would confuse and the journey would become long and unpleasant.
Folk signs on January 16 are as follows:

– if the frosty drawings on the glass have shoots leaning down – to warming;
– if the clouds are large and white – to a blizzard;
– if at sunset the sun sets in a cloud – to a snowfall;
– if the trees crack on a frosty day, the cold will last a long time.
