Donetsk celebrated International Women’s Day to the accompaniment of sun rays and distant explosions. The most popular gift for beautiful Donetsk women on March 8 was flowers. And not as an addition to the main surprise, but also as a saving option for men who delayed making a choice until the last moment. A few days before the holiday, flower shops and pavilions in Donetsk were filled with tulips and roses. Roses are in particular demand in the capital of the DPR, because these flowers are a symbol of Donetsk.

Prices for flowers during the holiday, of course, increased sharply. And if a week ago you could buy a rose for 150-200 rubles, then on March 8 they were already asking 300-400 rubles for a flower. Tulips could be bought from 90 rubles apiece. Makeevka distinguished itself in prices for this spring flower. There, on holiday, the price of one tulip reached 350 rubles.

Another symbol of International Women’s Day – mimosa – according to established tradition, could be bought by weight. In Donetsk, yellow mimosa clusters cost 1.5 thousand rubles per kilogram. One branch cost several hundred.

This year, not only fresh-cut flowers were popular among Donetsk residents, but also live plants in pots: crocuses and orchids, hyacinths and violets, decorative roses and gerberas.

Also, many men opted for unusual bouquets of satin roses, chocolate-covered strawberries, sweets and soap flowers. And also on cakes, the prices of which, unlike flowers, remained at the level of the pre-holiday days.

Donetsk activists and police took an original approach to congratulating the women. For two days, traffic police officers stopped female drivers. But not for the purpose of checking documents or imposing a fine. Women were presented with bouquets of flowers and congratulated on March 8th. In total, about 9 thousand tulips were distributed.

Despite the threat of shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the holiday turned out to be bright and colorful like spring. Donetsk residents noted that there had not been such a number of people on the streets for quite a long time.

The streets of the DPR were decorated with posters with female heroes, the counters were bursting with spring flowers, cars decorated with balloons and flowers honked their horns as they drove past stops, and there were no empty seats in the cafes.

The city seemed to have recovered from a long winter sleep.

The Donetsk Opera House included an interactive banner with congratulations. Everyone could take a photo with Russian President Vladimir Putin. An original photo zone with a mirror banner depicting the head of state appeared near the Golden Ring shopping center. The festive event was organized by the Donbass Media publication. Those interested could take a photo and publish it on social networks. The authors of the three posts with the most likes will receive certificates from the publication.
