Russian figure skater Oleg Protopopov died in his sleep on October 31 in the Swiss city of Interlaken, the Russian Figure Skating Federation reports, citing two-time German champion in men’s single skating Sepp Schoenmetzler.

It was previously reported that two-time Olympic champion Protopopov died at the age of 91.

Protopopov and Lyudmila Belousova, with whom he performed in tandem, became champions of the Olympic Games in Innsbruck (1964) and Grenoble (1968), and also won victories in many other international competitions. They were the first to perform some elements that later became mandatory.
