Winston Churchill’s denture sold at auction for $22.7 thousand at auction

A denture that belonged to former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was sold at auction for 18 thousand pounds ($22.7 thousand). The TV channel reported this information Sky News, referring to the auction house The Cotswold Auction Company, which held the auction in the city of Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) in the west of England.

This denture was a false jaw used by the politician, including during his famous “We Will Fight on the Beaches” speech on June 4, 1940. This speech became Churchill’s second most important in the House of Commons of the British Parliament after Great Britain joined the Second World War. The amount paid for this lot at auction was significantly more than double the original estimate (from 5 to 8 thousand pounds).

Churchill had serious dental problems throughout his life and lost several of them between the ages of 20 and 30. He had as many as four dentures, and he always carried with him a spare removable denture, which helped him speak without a lisp, which was especially important for a successful politician. The dentures served him as a physiological and psychological support, allowing him to speak effectively.

Interest in artifacts associated with Winston Churchill continues. In 2010, his false jaw was already sold at auction, and then they paid 15.2 thousand pounds ($23.7 thousand at that time) for it. This time the microphone through which he announced the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945 was sold separately for £11,500, plus buyer’s commission.
