Istanbul faces risk of acute water shortage with 57 days left

Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, is facing the threat of water shortages. Supplies could run out within 57 days as reservoir levels have dropped to 20.6%, according to data from the Istanbul Water Resources and Sewerage Authority.
According to these data, since April of this year, water reserves have decreased from 48.5% to 20.6%, which means the availability of 180 million cubic meters of water against the maximum possible volume of 868 million cubic meters.
If Istanbul, which has a population of 16 million, continues to consume 3.1 million cubic meters of water per day without significant rainfall as it currently does, its water reserves will run out in about two months.
Due to the prolonged drought, a large part of Turkey has already been declared an emergency zone. Since the beginning of September, Istanbul authorities have taken measures to ban the use of water for irrigation of private parks and gardens.
According to meteorological forecasts, no rain is expected in Turkey for the next 10 days, exacerbating an already tense situation.
