Israeli football player Yechezkel detained in Turkey due to support for Gaza
Israeli footballer Sagiv Yehezkel, who plays for the Turkish club Antalyaspor, was arrested in Turkey on charges of “publicly inciting hostility and hatred.” The reason was the player’s gesture in support of Israel’s operation in the Gaza Strip during the match. This was announced by Turkish Minister of Justice Yilmaz Tunç.
According to the minister’s statement, the Antalya Chief Prosecutor’s Office has begun legal proceedings in this case. He also condemned Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip.
On January 14, during the Antalyaspor-Trabzonspor match, after scoring a goal, Yehezkel pointed to a bandage on his arm with the inscription “100 days. 7.10″ and the image of the Star of David. The inscription meant the 100th day of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which began on October 7, 2023 with an attack by Hamas militants on Israeli territory. After this, the board of directors of the football club excluded the athlete from the team. Antalyaspor explained its decision by saying that Yehezkel “acted against the national values” of Turkey.
