Aleksey Malashenko, an Islamic scholar, died at the age of 72. This was announced by political scientist Arkady Dubnov. He did not specify the reasons for the death of Mr. Malashenko.

Aleksey Malashenko is an orientalist, Islamic scholar and political scientist. In 1995, he received a doctorate in history from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). Over the years, Mr. Malashenko taught at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and the Higher School of Economics. He was also a chief research fellow at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
