Iran opposes the fighting in Ukraine and is ready to become a mediator to resolve the conflict. This was stated by the President of the Republic Ebrahim Raisi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
“We have repeatedly stated that we are ready to act as a mediator in order to achieve a cessation of hostilities between the Russian Federation and Ukraine,” he said (quote according to Newsweek).
The Iranian leader also pointed out the destabilizing role of the United States, which provides military assistance to Kyiv, instead of helping to end the hostilities.
Previously, Tehran supported peace initiatives in Ukraine proposed by China and Saudi Arabia. In February 2023, China presented a 12-point plan that proposes compliance with the UN Charter to respect the sovereignty of all countries, a cessation of hostilities, facilitating the start of a dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv, etc. Saudi Arabia in early August spent in Jeddah, negotiations without Russian participation on a peaceful resolution of the situation in Ukraine.
At the beginning of September, the readiness to undertake mediation on Ukraine also stated Ankara. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized that “there is no winner of the war, no defeated world.” According to him, Türkiye adheres to “this principled approach.”
Russian authorities regularly emphasize that Moscow is ready for negotiations with Kiev. At the same time, the Kremlin points out the impossibility of holding them due to the decree signed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on the refusal of negotiations with Russia as long as Vladimir Putin is its president.
