Russians risk being left without communication on the iPhone 15, MTS issued this warning. But the company made a reservation that the problem will not affect all smartphones. The fact is that some devices imported through parallel import may be intended for specific foreign operators. If such gadgets are activated in other countries, they may simply “not register on the network.”

In addition, as MTS clarified, some smartphones do not support Russian Internet and communications bands. There is such a problem, and it is typical not only for the latest model from Apple, noted independent telecom analyst Alexey Boyko:

“Of course, there is such a feature that manufacturers often designate certain batches and devices for a specific country, and, accordingly, prescribe the profiles of local operators, including support for certain frequency ranges.

At the same time, it so happened that the frequencies used by Russian LTE networks are the most common in the world. And therefore, if we are talking about global versions of smartphones, then, as a rule, they support, if not all bands in the Russian Federation, then at least two of them, or even more.

Rather, there is another problem. Sometimes it turns out that a smartphone simply does not support popular combinations of bands; at the same time, it is not provided for this in hardware, which very significantly affects the maximum speeds that it can provide to its owner.”

To avoid problems, MTS advised not to buy phones on the Internet, but to use the services of only trusted retailers. The operator noted that, for its part, it tests all devices that it imports into Russia for sale and provides a guarantee, unlike “grey stores.”

However, the editor-in-chief of the vilianov.com portal, Sergei Vilyanov, sees no reason to completely distrust sellers on marketplaces:

“There are about a dozen different smartphones for different markets, and some of them actually behave quite strangely in Russian conditions; let’s say, some of the functions do not work.

The fact is that there are markets similar to the Russian one, and there are completely different ones. And it is very important that the company that sells understands this well, since some citizens simply bring to us everything that says “iPhone” on it. Because of this, you may encounter unpleasant surprises.

But if you don’t strive for some kind of extreme cheapness and look at seller ratings, then it’s quite difficult to run into a non-working or defective device. So I wouldn’t overestimate these horror stories.”

Russians have already had problems with iPhones purchased through parallel imports. In 2022, some 14th generation devices were imported into the country from the United States and did not have a tray for a regular SIM card. Smartphones supported only electronic SIM cards, mainly from foreign operators. Because of this, it was impossible to use gadgets in Russia.
