Invented vestibular apparatus for robots: will not allow you to fall

Its task is to evaluate the change in the position of the machine
The “vestibular apparatus” for robots was created by Russian scientists developing unmanned vehicles. Its task is to assess the change in the position of the car in space, the acceleration and direction of its movement, in much the same way as a human driver does.
As MK became aware, the new device was designed for autonomous control of agricultural machinery. This is a navigation module that is installed, for example, on the roof of a combine. It includes a satellite receiver and an inertial navigation system (a system for determining the coordinates and parameters of an object’s movement that does not require external landmarks).
Such a system, like the vestibular apparatus in the human inner ear, allows you to determine, for example, the position of the combine in space. It consists of three accelerometers – devices that measure acceleration along three axes, and three gyroscopes that measure angular velocity. The system, among other things, allows you to find the angles of orientation of equipment, for example, instantly determine how much the device tilted. This helps to compensate for the buildup of the combine on bumps, as well as the slope of the field. Without taking into account this orientation, it is impossible to achieve the navigation accuracy of 2-3 cm required for unmanned vehicles.
According to the developers, their “vestibular apparatus” also serves as an addition to the robot’s computer vision system. This mechanism is important for performing operations in areas where there are no visual references.
The new system has already been tested in the fields of Orenburg and a number of other regions.
