The infectiousness of coronavirus infection will increase with each subsequent mutation. But this does not mean that the course of the disease will become more severe. This was told in an interview with TASS by infectious disease specialist Evgeny Timakov.

“The most important thing is that the virus does not become more pathogenic. This is the evolution of the virus, it is unprofitable for him to kill his master, ”said the physician.

Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor reported the first case of infection with a new variant of the XBB.1.5 omicron strain, or “kraken” in Russia. He was diagnosed in the Penza region

On Friday, in an interview with the Russia 24 TV channel, the director of the Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after V.I. N.F. Gamalei Alexander Gunzburg assessed the appearance of the “kraken” in Russia. In his opinion, this suggests that the coronavirus will change more rapidly, and the number of strains will increase rapidly. At the same time, the incidence of coronavirus infection may increase.

According to scientists, the kraken is the most contagious variant of the virus in the history of the pandemic. Experts do not rule out that it could later become the dominant variant of the coronavirus.
