Indian military frees crew of cargo ship seized by pirates off the coast of Somalia

The Indian Navy has released sailors from the crew of the bulk carrier Lila Norfolk, which was previously captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia.

The cargo ship’s crew reportedly included 21 sailors, including 15 Indian citizens.

Earlier it became known that a group of unknown persons with weapons had landed on the cargo ship; the crew sounded an alarm and took refuge in a special citadel on the ship.

The Indian Navy reportedly landed special forces on the ship, but by then the pirates had already abandoned it.

The Indian Navy said in a statement that its destroyer remains in close proximity to the cargo ship and is assisting it in restoring power and engine output and resuming sailing.
