India declares August 23 as National Space Day – Kommersant

“In today’s era, a country that advances in science and technology will determine the map of history. In order to encourage our younger generation to get involved in science, technology and space activities, we have decided that August 23, the day our Chandrayaan-3 lander touched the moon, will be celebrated as National Space Day,” said Mr. Modi, speaking at a meeting at the Indian Space Research Organization (quoted from Hindustan Times).
Narendra Modi also announced that the Chandrayaan 3 lunar landing site will now be called “Shiva Shakti Point”. Explaining the reasons for this decision, the Prime Minister of India said: “We applaud the efforts of women scientists in the successful space mission and the landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon.”
Shiva Shakti is one of the most important concepts in Hinduism. Shakti embodies feminine energy and is often depicted as the wife of Shiva, one of the three supreme gods of Hinduism. In the philosophy of Hinduism, Shakti is a symbol of cosmic divine power and a life-giving feminine principle.
On August 23, the landing module of the Indian station “Chandrayan-3” successfully sat down to the surface of the moon. The next day, August 24, the Pragyan lunar rover, delivered aboard the station, for the first time passed over the surface of the moon. India became the first country to make a soft landing at the south pole of the moon.
