A typhoon in southern Sakhalin led to the flooding of ten houses in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Governor Valery Limarenko said. Six apartment buildings and more than 500 private houses, home to 2,602 people, were left without electricity. A state of emergency was introduced in the city.
First shift classes have been canceled in all schools in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Korsakovsky, Dolinsky districts and the village of Trotsikoye, Aniva district. According to weather forecasters, heavy rains will continue until about 11:00 and will weaken in the evening, Mr. Limarenko clarified.
“All necessary measures are now being taken to eliminate the consequences and restore power supply. People whose homes were damaged by bad weather will be able to count on help from the authorities,” the governor wrote in Telegram.
Due to the passage of the typhoon, a state of emergency was introduced in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, said Mayor Sergei Nadsadin. “We are receiving signals from people about flooding of houses – there are currently more than 20 of them. I demanded that teams be organized and go to all the addresses that people reported,”— told He.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 36 people and 30 pieces of equipment are involved in eliminating the consequences of the cyclone. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport receives and releases aircraft as usual.
