In Yaroslavl Rostov began to collect signatures for the renaming of the city

In Rostov, Yaroslavl region, at the initiative of the social movement, signature collection points were opened for renaming the city to Rostov the Great. This was reported in the press service of the government of the region “RIA Novosti”.

“Many residents of our region are surprised that the official name of Rostov has not yet been changed. For the majority, he has always been and is Rostov the Great. It’s time to formalize this into law. Therefore, we organized the movement “For Rostov the Great!” and began collecting votes. By the beginning of August, we had collected about three thousand signatures,” said Olga Polozova, a member of the movement, her words are quoted by the press service.

The collection of signatures will make it possible to start the procedure prescribed by law for renaming the city to Rostov the Great. The initiative was supported by members of the Public Chamber of the Rostov Municipal District and municipal deputies. The collection of signatures will continue until mid-October.

According to Yevgeny Churkin, director of the department for regional policy and interaction with local authorities of the Yaroslavl region, the government will support the renaming of the city if the townspeople are interested in it. “The changes should be comprehensive, so if by the end of October the residents express their position on the issue of renaming, we will support it at the regional level and turn to our colleagues from the federation in order to officially rename Rostov to Rostov the Great. In this matter, it is important to rely on the opinion of the people,” he said.

The ancient city on the site of modern Rostov was called Rostov the Great in the Ipatiev Chronicle when describing the events of 1151.
