In Vladivostok, a court found a 39-year-old local resident guilty of vandalism (Part 1, Article 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). She desecrated the monument to the Hero of the USSR intelligence officer Richard Sorge. As punishment, she was fined 5,000 rubles.

The prosecutor’s office of the region does not agree with the decision of the court, calling it too lenient, and filed an appeal. “In connection with the excessive lenientness of the sentence imposed, the prosecutor’s office brought an appeal to the verdict,”— informs supervisory agency.
As the prosecutor’s office explained to Kommersant, the state prosecution also requested a fine as punishment, but on a larger scale. It was difficult to quickly name its exact size in the department, explaining that the state prosecutor in the case is currently in another process and it is still impossible to contact him.
Recall, the woman suspected of desecrating the monument to Richard Sorge, was detained May 15, 2022. At first she was in custody in a pre-trial detention center, but in July the measure of restraint was reduced to house arrest. Initially, the woman was charged with vandalism, but later the article was reclassified as “Destruction or damage to objects of cultural heritage (monuments of history and culture) of the peoples of the Russian Federation” (Article 243 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), it provides for up to five years in prison.
The monument to the Hero of the Soviet Union intelligence officer Richard Sorge was opened in Vladivostok in November 2019. “Richard Sorge was closely connected with Vladivostok, where he sent encrypted messages from Japan. These reports made it possible to conclude that the Japanese would not go to war with the USSR, and the Red Army troops stationed in the Far East were sent to help the front near Moscow, ”the press service of the mayor’s office of the capital of Primorye reported.
