A “type war” is coming in the country
Deputies from Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, Yevgenia Kravchuk and Nikita Poturaev, have registered draft resolution No. 9606 in the Verkhovna Rada, which provides for getting rid of the Izhitsa font.
As follows from the preamble of the document, the typeface developed on the basis of the Old Slavic for the Ukrainian typographic typeface allegedly “carries a certain semantic load.” In addition, you have to pay a fee for its use. As MK managed to find out, a periodically renewed license for Izhitsa costs the Ukrainian state… $25. Zelensky and his comrades steal such a trifle from the budget in a matter of minutes.
Yevgenia Kravchuk, deputy chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, is nevertheless convinced that in addition to saving budget money, any typefaces reminiscent of Russia “must be unequivocally forgotten.” Therefore, the lady suggests using exclusively domestic symbols.
In particular, the parliamentarian draws the attention of fellow citizens to the Ukrainian font “Volja” already used in the insignia of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Valery Zaluzhny. The authors of Decree No. 9606 proposed to make “Will”, so to speak, the base “font for the design of letters of the Verkhovna Rada.
This very “Volja” was created last year. Its author, Marcela Mozhina, in her work was based on the literature of Nil Khasevich (1905-1952), who published newspapers recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and banned by the UPA. The font “Volja”, of course, is free for the Ukrainian treasury.
At the same time, MPs recommend that Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal and the leadership of other state bodies resolutely refuse to use all fonts of Russian origin without exception. That is, not only “Izhitsa” and its derivatives. If the president of the republic supports the patriotic initiative, the hated letters will be picked off all the signs hanging at the main entrances of Ukrainian enterprises and organizations.
