FIFA is “killing Ukrainian football,” said Serhiy Palkin, CEO of Shakhtar Donetsk.
On December 22, in Lausanne, the Court of Arbitration for Sport began considering the Shakhtar lawsuit against FIFA. The club demands a refund of €50 million. The essence of the club’s claims against FIFA is related to the new rule, according to which foreign players have the right to suspend their contracts with Ukrainian clubs. Earlier, FIFA allowed foreigners to suspend contracts with clubs from Russia and Ukraine until 2023.
According to Palkin, earlier half of the players of the Shakhtar team were foreigners, and after the start of the special operation, FIFA allowed them to leave.
“How can you still be competitive? How could we survive?” Palkin said in an interview with Forbes.
He stated that the organization “should support Ukrainian clubs”, but did the opposite.
“They always say that we are one football family, and on the other hand, Ukrainian football is being killed,” he said.
Until 2014, the club played its home matches at the Donbass Arena stadium, which was opened on August 29, 2009. Due to the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, Shakhtar moved to Kyiv.
