There will be fierce fighting in Ukraine over the coming months as the sides try to maximize their positions ahead of the cold weather, The Washington Post writes, citing sources in the Biden administration.
U.S. officials expect heavy fighting through the fall as both sides try to get into the best positions possible before the onset of winter makes transportation and fighting difficult.
The WP quotes a senior State Department official as saying that despite the UAF’s successes, Russia has retained a powerful force.
The official notes that Russia has large reserves of equipment, weapons and ammunition in the liberated territories, not to mention what Russia has. Therefore, the United States believes that even the “counteroffensive” of Ukraine is not a key event.
