Today, June 11, Acting Governor of the Kherson region Volodymyr Saldo signed a decree according to which Russian, Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar are considered official languages in the region. In his Telegram channel Mr. Saldo noted that this decision was approved by President Vladimir Putin. The document was signed on the eve of Russia Day.
“Recognize that the residents of the Kherson region are guaranteed the right to use their native language, the free choice of Russian, Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar and other languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation as a language of communication, education, training and creativity,” the decree says.
Along with the Russian language, the Ukrainian language can be used for communication and office work, and on the territory of the Genichesk and Novotroitsky districts, the Crimean Tatar language can also be used. “The importance and timeliness of such a decision during our yesterday’s conversation was confirmed by the President of Russia,”— declared Acting Governor of the Kherson region. The document comes into force from the day of its official publication.
In Ukraine, the Russian language does not have the status of a state language; in 2012-2018, it was the official language in the southern and eastern regions of the country. In 2017, the country introduced a ban on education in public educational institutions in any language other than Ukrainian.
June 8 took place telephone conversation between Vladimir Saldo and Vladimir Putin. They, among other things, discussed the situation after the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP.
