Administration of the city of Angarsk, Irkutsk region informed on the exhumation of the remains of the buried and the transfer of graves from the flooded cemetery near the Yakimovka lodge. The threat to burials as a result of the erosion of the coastline of the Kitoy River, which flows into the Angara, has become known yesterday, July 30, when the prosecutor’s office of Angarsk began checking on this fact.

“At the meeting of the CoES with the participation of representatives of the prosecutor’s office, Rospotrebnadzor, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Emergency Situations, they came to the conclusion that there is a serious threat to the sanitary and epidemiological situation for the SNT located downstream from Yakimovka. On the territory of the urban district, a high alert regime was introduced. Measures were taken to exhume and reburial the remains of 10 people. The procedure was performed by a specialized organization,” the Angarsk administration said in a statement.

According to the mayor’s office, “the second and third stages of reburial” are planned. Currently, the graves located near the river have been moved. The administration claims that “the remains of the bodies did not fall into the water,” while “the destruction of the coastline continues.” The cemetery, which was damaged by water, is considered inactive; the last burial was carried out on it about 15 years ago.
