In Sweden, a Russian emigrant was accused of spying for Moscow

A man with dual citizenship of Russia and Sweden, who was detained in November 2022 in Stockholm, was charged with spying for Russia to the detriment of Sweden and the United States, the newspaper Expressen reports.

The 60-year-old businessman is suspected of using his companies to pass sensitive information to Russian intelligence. The prosecutor’s office also believes that his business was “part of the Russian state system for illegal acquisition of technology in the West” and circumvention of sanctions. The source of the publication did not rule out the use of the transferred products for military purposes.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the businessman cooperated with some persons in Sweden and foreigners. Some of them used fictitious names and may have been linked to Russian intelligence agencies.

The defendant’s lawyer, Ulrika Borg, said she would provide the investigation with the necessary materials to prove her client’s innocence. She also noted that he “was exposed” during interrogations.

During a special operation, a man and his wife were detained in a suburb of Stockholm. Two helicopters were involved, and the task force descended from them and entered the suspect’s house through the windows. Initially, the detainee’s wife was also suspected of assisting, but later the charges were dropped and she was released.
