Rosstat: in Russia the number of sterilizations of women instead of abortions is growing
According to Rosstat, the number of sterilization operations for women in Russia has reached a record high over the past 16 years. In 2022, Russian women performed 15 thousand procedures, which is about 45 operations per 100 thousand women aged 15 to 49 years. The last time higher figures were recorded was in 2006, when more than 17 thousand operations were performed. The obstetrician-gynecologist explains the increase in the number of sterilization procedures in women by the dissemination of information about the possibility of such an operation and the good awareness of Russian women about its consequences. Sterilization is usually done in parallel with other gynecological procedures, for example, during a caesarean section. In Russia, the procedure is allowed for women and men who have reached 35 years of age and have at least two children, with the exception of medical conditions.
