Rosaviatsiya: the number of collisions of aircraft with birds in Russia increased by 82%
According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, the number of bird strikes in Russia this year has increased by 82%, RBC reports citing a letter from the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Alexander Neradko, to his subordinates in the territorial divisions of the department.
He reports that in May-January this year, the number of collisions that did not result in damage to aircraft increased to 244 cases (+ 7%). In addition, there has been an increase in cases of collisions with other animals, in 12 out of 21 cases, aircraft had to go around.
The frequency of bird strikes was also noted last year. In the first 9 months of 2022, 918 cases were recorded (+ 12%). Most cases occurred in the middle of summer, as of July, 204 collisions were recorded.
Recall that in 2019 there was a plane crash due to birds getting into the mechanism of the Airbus 321 aircraft of Ural Airlines, but thanks to the skill of the commander and co-pilot, the plane made an emergency landing on a cornfield, and no one was hurt. Then, during takeoff, the plane collided with a flock of seagulls, as a result of which both engines failed. There were 226 passengers and 7 crew members on board.
It is noted that back in 2018, Neradko named the airports where bird strikes most often occur per 100,000 takeoffs / landings. The worst in 2017 was the statistics of the Abakan airport, in the top ten there were also six southern airports, the capital’s Sheremetyevo airport closed the top ten, and Domodedovo and Vnukovo were then in 15th and 16th places.
