On Tuesday, December 19, Orthodox believers will celebrate the Day of Remembrance of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. In the church calendar, this day is dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra, and in the folk calendar it is known as St. Nicholas the Winter.
In Russia, St. Nicholas is celebrated twice a year: in winter and spring. On May 22, the Orthodox Church celebrates the transfer of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker from Myra in Lycia to the Italian city of Bari, and in the popular calendar this day is called St. Nicholas the Vernal.
Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill expressed his opinion that belonging to the Russian people should be determined by faith in Orthodoxy. He made this statement after the liturgy in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” on Bolshaya Ordynka in Moscow. According to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, it is very important that the understanding of one’s belonging to the Russian people is accompanied by a deep faith in Orthodoxy.
