In Russia in 2022 there were 1.4 million fewer smokers

In 2022, the number of smoking Russians decreased by 5.8%, or by 1.4 million people, follows from an analytical report by FinExpertiza, based on Rosstat data. Last year, the number of Russian citizens who smoke amounted to 22.99 million people, or 19.2% of the population over 15 years old.
The materials of FinExpertiza note that the most “smoking regions” in 2022 were the Republic of Altai, where 34.2% of the adult population use tobacco products, the Sakhalin Region (33.5%) and the Magadan Region (31.9%).
The smallest number of smokers was recorded among residents of Chechnya, where only 3.3% of the population over 15 smoke, as well as Ingushetia (4%) and Dagestan (6%). Over the past year, people began to smoke less in 49 regions of Russia. The largest decrease in the number of smokers is observed in Mordovia, where the proportion of the nicotine-dependent population has decreased to 10.2%.
Experts emphasize that smoking is most common among men. In general, every third man smokes in Russia and only every twelfth woman smokes. The share of smokers among men in 2022 was 34.6%, among women – 8.3%.
The number of smoking Russians has been declining for several years. In 2019, 23.2% of the adult population, or about 28.03 million people, systematically consumed tobacco products. In 2020, the number of smokers in Russia decreased by 7.3%, in 2021 – by 6.1%.
