In the Moscow region, a cloned cow for the first time in Russia brought offspring. She gave birth to a healthy calf weighing 40 kg. This was reported in the suburban Ministry of Agriculture.
The department noted that this is an important achievement for scientists, since “the development of genomic editing technology can only be possible if cloned animals are able to produce viable offspring.”
The studies were carried out by specialists of the Federal Research Center for Animal Husbandry named after Academician L.K. Ernst. In April 2020, the center received the first cattle clone in Russia using somatic cell nuclei as donors.
“The results obtained indicate that further research is needed to develop somatic cloning as the main technological platform for genomic editing of cattle,” the ministry said.
The world’s first successfully cloned mammal was Dolly the sheep. It was produced by transplanting the nucleus of a somatic cell into the cytoplasm of the egg. The experiment was carried out in 1996 in Scotland.
