In Russia, as part of the Safe City program, more than 1 million video surveillance cameras have been installed, every third of them is connected to a facial recognition system, said the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadayev. He noted that the largest number of video surveillance systems are installed in Moscow.
“In Russia there are more than 1 million cameras that monitor safety in places of residence, in public places, at transport facilities, on the roads. Today, virtually every third camera is connected to a facial recognition system. All the cameras that are on the roads automatically recognize license plates,” said Mr. Shadayev at the AI Day as part of the international exhibition and forum “Russia” (quote from “Interfax”).
Maksut Shadayev called Moscow the undisputed leader in video surveillance among Russian cities. He noted that over 10 years of development of the “Safe City” system, the number of registered street crimes in the capital has been halved. According to the minister, the number of registered thefts has decreased by 10 times, and the detection rate of recorded crimes has doubled. “And all this is thanks to these technologies,” he emphasized.
The installation of cameras in Moscow began back in 2012. In 2015, the capital’s Department of Regional Security reported that in places where cameras were installed, the number of murders decreased by 12.5%, rapes by 11.7%, and cases of hooliganism by 20%. In November 2023, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the recognition system for faces and vehicles in Moscow is 99.8%.
