In Russia, child mortality decreased by 23% – Kommersant

In Russia, the mortality rate of children under 17 years of age has decreased by 23%, said Health Minister Mikhail Murashko. The minister did not specify for what period this figure was covered. According to him, this year Russia also reached a historic minimum in infant mortality.
“The results of the effective and well-coordinated work of doctors have been a decrease in the overall mortality rate and an increase in life expectancy. A historic low in infant mortality has been reached. The mortality rate of children under 17 decreased by 23%. The state takes care of newborns,” said Mikhail Murashko in a New Year’s address published in Telegram channel Ministry of Health. According to the minister, such indicators were achieved, among other things, due to an extensive program of prenatal and neonatal screening.
By data The Ministry of Health, in the first half of the year, through expanded neonatal screening, more than 30 children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) were identified. A total of 140 children with impaired immunity were identified.
Infant mortality in Russia is falling every year. During the period from 2013 to 2020, the decrease in this indicator was 43.6%. In 2021, infant mortality fell to a new low of 4.4 deaths per thousand children.
