In Russia, cases of simultaneous infection with influenza and coronavirus are recorded. Most often they occur in people with weakened immune systems, said Natalya Pshenichnaya, deputy director for clinical and analytical work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.
Cases have also been reported in young children and the elderly. “These viruses can stay and multiply in the respiratory tract for a long time,” Pshenichnaya told the media.
Such cases, she notes, usually occur with damage to the lower respiratory tract, that is, more severely, with the development of viral pneumonia. The acute period of the disease can last for several weeks. “The risk of death associated with viral or viral-bacterial pneumonia is higher,” the specialist explained. To identify a combination of infections, as she clarified, allows testing.
With the simultaneous treatment of influenza and COVID-19, combined antiviral therapy is used that targets both viruses. The question of methods of therapy is decided by physicians in each individual case individually.
