In Mordovia, 10 out of 18 private clinics refused to perform abortions after meetings with the authorities

The authorities of Mordovia sent appeals, invited and held conversations with the management of private clinics in the republic on the issue of abortion. As a result, 10 out of 18 commercial organizations refused to provide such a service, said the head of Mordovia Artem Zdunov at the 25th World Russian People’s Council.

“We turned to (the heads of private clinics.— ”b”), invited, talked. We have 10 out of 18 private clinics that are licensed (to perform abortions.— ”b”), they voluntarily abandoned this,” said Mr. Zdunov (quoted from TASS).

On August 2, Mordovia became the first Russian region accepted a law prohibiting inducing women to undergo abortion. Then Artem Zdunov said that five private clinics in the region refused to perform abortions.

According to the authorities of Mordovia, by the spring of 2023, the number of abortions in the region had decreased by 42% year on year. Artem Zdunov explained that the decline was facilitated, among other things, by training doctors in the “algorithm for communicating with pregnant patients.” At the same time, according to him, the number of operations for artificial termination of pregnancy has decreased in state clinics, while in private clinics, on the contrary, it has increased.

Over the past few months, there has been a growing number of regions in Russia in which private clinics are refusing to perform abortions after meetings with regional officials who offer to “contribute to improving the demographic situation in the country.” Today, commercial organizations in Crimea and the Kursk region have completely abandoned the provision of abortions, and clinics in Tatarstan and the Chelyabinsk region have partially refused to perform abortions.
