Due to an increase in the number of illegal migrants using freight trains to travel, Mexico’s largest rail operator, Ferromex, has temporarily suspended freight services to several destinations.
The company said in a statement on Tuesday on its social media page X (formerly known as Twitter): “Given the significant increase in the number of migrants concentrated in various regions of the country and the serious threat that the use of freight trains poses to their safety, the company Ferromex is temporarily delaying 60 trains.”
It is noted that the volume of delayed trains heading to the northern border of the country is equivalent to the volume of 1.8 thousand trucks. The carrier says the number of migrants using the trains has increased significantly in recent days, with the number now standing at at least 2,300.
