In Mari El liquidated the oldest human rights organization “Man and Law”

The Supreme Court of Mari El on Monday decided to liquidate the interregional public human rights organization “Man and Law” (recognized as a foreign agent). Human rights activists themselves in the Telegram channel.
The lawsuit was filed by the department of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation for the republic in January 2023 after an unscheduled inspection of a human rights organization. Claims include the work of human rights activists in those regions where they did not have their own representation, violation of the law on foreign agents, and inconsistency of activities with the statutory goals (for example, “Man and the Law” helped people living with HIV, which was not written in the documents).
“Man and Law” was founded in Mari El in 1999. The chairman of the organization is Irina Protasova. Human rights activists provided legal assistance to civil activists who suffered from the actions of law enforcement agencies, prisoners and families with children.
In 2014, the organization was recognized as a foreign agent. At the end of 2019, the Ministry of Justice already filed a lawsuit for its liquidation. However, in 2020, the Supreme Court of Mari El refused to satisfy this requirement.
