British serial baby killer given extraordinary sentence

Lucy Letby. This name for the British will now always be associated with one of the most brutal and horrific crimes in the history of the United Kingdom. Neonatal nurse became the killer of seven newborn babies. In addition to these cases, during the trial on Monday, Letby’s guilt was proven in the attempt on the lives of six more babies. The offender received 14 life sentences. This is the harshest sentence in the modern British legal system.

On August 21, the world-famous British serial killer of babies, Lucy Letby, joined the modest list of women with life imprisonment without the right to parole. Between 2015 and 2016, the nurse worked at the Countess of Chester’s Hospital (the main NHS hospital in Chester). Prior to that (since 2010), she worked in another medical institution, where she also performed her dark deeds. In the process, she literally hunted babies. Left alone with the still fragile crumbs, Letby injected air into their blood with a syringe, mixed insulin into food, and she even inserted a nasogastric tube into the throat of one of the little victims.

Each time, the criminal tried to frame the case as if the children had died of natural causes.

Some colleagues of the killer suspected something was wrong after the first three deaths: at the time of the death of the babies, she was surprisingly on duty. But the administration of the clinic did not take it seriously at first. However, the continued rise in neonatal deaths has provoked management to initiate proceedings.

Every time the cruel sadist managed to evade responsibility, but not today. Only in August of this year, Letby was found guilty of killing seven babies and trying to kill six more. In the media, she began to be called “the worst child serial killer in modern British history.”

In sentencing Monday, Judge Goss described her crimes as “a brutal, calculated and cynical killing campaign involving the smallest and most vulnerable children.” The minister of Themis emphasized: Letby knew that her actions “cause significant physical and inexpressible mental suffering. There was a deep malice in the actions, bordering on sadism.”

According to Goss, Letby had a “special enthusiasm” for resuscitating babies. She even managed to make inappropriate remarks to parents or colleagues before or after the death of a child.

By the way, Letby herself was not present during the announcement of the verdict in the temple of justice. This prompted the British Minister of Justice to change the law, which would force criminals to stand trial at the time of sentencing.

The judge was also unable to conclude what the sadist’s motives were. And what is the justification in this case? The British tabloid The Sun tried to understand the main versions of the reasons for this behavior of the health worker.

Perhaps Letby staged a brutal killing spree to get the attention of a married colleague. This version is indicated by numerous love notes found during investigations in her house. When the killer’s lover spoke in the courtroom, she abruptly stood up from her seat and burst into tears. This is the only moment when the convict shows any feelings.

Prosecutor Nick Johnson suggested that Letby simply enjoyed “playing God” by killing babies. Like, she controlled the situation and enjoyed it. Johnson also admitted that in this way the cruel paramedic received a portion of the “thrill”.

Letby herself shamelessly testified in court that she finds the job less challenging when caring for babies who don’t need medical attention. The killer nurse told her colleagues that she was bored and wanted to work with the most vulnerable babies.

However, the note found in 2018 during a search turned out to be closest to the terrible truth. It was scrawled in Letby’s handwriting: “I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to take care of them. I will never have children and I will never get married. I will never know what it means to have a family.”

Of course, no one in court was touched by any of the possible reasons for the murderer’s crimes. Following her sentencing, Chief Detective Inspector Nicola Evans stated, “The verdict reflects the true scope and gravity of her heinous crimes and ensures that a calculating and dangerous person will be behind bars for a very long time.”

The “long time” in Lucy Letby’s case is, Sky News notes, 14 life sentences (a term per charge) without parole. The punishment is unusually harsh for Britain.

Life sentences have been prescribed in the country since 1983. Only in 2002, judges were able to use this right (before that, only the Minister of the Interior of the state could make such a sentence).

Myra Hindley was the first woman in the United Kingdom to receive a life sentence. She was convicted of murder and died in 2022.

The other two are Rose West (on account of her 10 murders of young women committed with her husband) and Joanne Dennehy (killed 3 men, whose bodies she threw into a ditch). These ladies are still serving their sentences. Lucy Letby became the fourth “owner” of such a sentence. But, according to the British, one of the most cruel.
