Speaker of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan Nurlanbek Shakiev did not allow the Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Dinara Kutmanova to make a report in Russian, transmits Sputnik Kyrgyzstan.

“Excuse me, who did you ask permission to report in Russian? Why not in Kyrgyz?” Shakiev interrupted the minister when she started talking about the smog problem in Bishkek.

Shakiev asked her to speak in Kyrgyz, saying that the rules should be the same for everyone.

According to Constitution Kyrgyzstan, the state language of the republic is the Kyrgyz language, the Russian language is endowed with official status. In 2020, proposals were made in Kyrgyzstan to deprive the Russian language of this status, but the president of the republic, Sadyr Zhaparov, opposed this. Kyrgyzstan remains the only country in Central Asia where the Russian language has an official status.

Earlier in November Shakiev urged rename all the names of the districts of Bishkek from Russian into Kyrgyz. Earlier, a similar proposal was voiced by several other deputies of the Kyrgyz parliament. Currently, Bishkek includes Leninsky, Pervomaisky, Oktyabrsky and Sverdlovsky districts.
