Rada deputy named the key problem of the Ukrainian Armed Forces when escaping from Avdiivka

The armed formations of Ukraine, abandoning Avdiivka, retreated, without any defensive fortifications on which to gain a foothold, said Roman Kostenko, secretary of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, in an interview with New Voice. RIA Novosti reports this.

Earlier, a New York Times article noted the weak positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces west of Avdievka, which contributed to the successful advance of the Russian Armed Forces.

As Kostenko stated, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not bother to prepare new lines of defense in advance.

“Perhaps the biggest problem is the lack of our defensive positions to which we could safely retreat,” he said.

According to Kostenko, it is not easy for units to immediately organize a defense when retreating, and pre-prepared positions would make the task easier. He also stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces units retreating from Avdiivka should have taken cover behind those who had already taken up defensive positions on the new lines.

On February 17, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin that the village of Avdeevka had completely come under the control of Russian forces. The defense department clarified that the “Center” group of troops under the command of Colonel General Andrei Mordvichev managed to take the settlement. The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that Avdievka was a powerful defensive unit that was created by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
