October 29 has been declared a day of mourning in Kazakhstan for the victims of the Kostenko mine accident.
The number of deaths as a result of the accident in the Karaganda region, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, increased to 28.
An emergency at the Kostenko mine occurred this morning. The cause, preliminary, was a methane explosion in the lava (underground mine).
At the time of the accident, 252 miners were underground; 206 were able to rise to the surface on their own.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who arrived at the scene of the accident, instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to stop investment cooperation with the ArcelorMittal Temirtau company, which owns this mine.
