Kishida: Japan has no plans to join NATO
Japan has no plans to join NATO, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said while answering deputies’ questions during a plenary session of the upper house of parliament.
The head of government noted that the opening of a representative office of the alliance in the country is also being discussed, but “no decisions have been made so far.”
At the same time, he emphasized that Tokyo will continue to strengthen cooperation with NATO member states and their allies in view of the difficult tests that the international order is now facing.
NATO is a military-political bloc that unites most of the countries of Europe (including Turkey), the United States of America and Canada. Founded on April 4, 1949 in the United States in order to protect Europe from a possible threat of Soviet expansion, then 12 countries became NATO member states: the USA, Canada, Iceland, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Denmark, Italy and Portugal. It is a “transatlantic forum” for Allied countries to consult on any issue affecting the vital interests of its members, including events that could endanger their security. One of NATO’s stated goals is to provide deterrence or defense against aggression against the territory of any NATO member state.
Currently, 31 countries are members of NATO. Finland was the last member state to join NATO on April 4, 2023.
