In India, a 92-year-old woman went to school for the first time, NDTV reported in its story.
Salima Khan from Bulandshahr district was born in 1931. There was no school in the village where she grew up. Having gotten married at the age of 14, Salima plunged headlong into family life.
Volunteers of a state program to improve literacy advised her to go get an education in her twenties. The woman obeyed and attended classes for six months with children 80 years younger than her.
With her decision, Salima inspired another 25 women from her village to receive primary education, the story notes.
“My grandchildren tricked me into giving them extra money because I didn’t know how to count banknotes,” the woman shared her grievance. “Those days are behind us,” she is now sure.
