Unintentional damage to the Estonian-Finnish Balticconnector gas pipeline and two communication cables in eight hours by one ship seems unlikely, says Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
“It is possible, but unlikely, that a ship could (unintentionally) damage two communications cables and a gas pipeline within eight hours,” she said.
She also emphasized that Finland is actively cooperating with China as part of the investigation into the incident. The main suspect remains the Chinese ship Newnew Polar Bear, flying the Hong Kong flag.
The Balticconnector gas pipeline was stopped on the night of October 8, it was reported that the cause was a possible leak.
Balticconnector is a gas pipeline with a length of about 80 kilometers along the bottom of the Gulf of Finland, connecting Inkoo in Finland and Paldiski in Estonia. It was launched in 2019.
