A skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex has been sold at an auction in Switzerland, assembled from nearly 300 bones found in three locations in the United States. The skeleton, dubbed “Trinity” and assembled from 293 bones, went under the hammer at the Koller auction in Zurich for 4.8 million francs ($5.3 million), which is below the expected price, reports AP.
Tyrannosaurus rex is a genus of carnivorous theropod dinosaurs.
The skeleton is 11.6 m long and 3.9 m high. Its mouth is open. “This is an amazingly well-restored original fossil (50.17% of the original bone material) collected from the bones of three exceptional specimens that were discovered between 2008 and 2013, comparable in size and quality, geological origin from the Hell Creek Formation and Lance Creek in Montana and Wyoming,” reads the description on site auction.
Koller said this is the first time a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton has been auctioned in Europe. The auction house’s director of marketing, Carl Green, did not name the buyer, but said it was “a private collector from Europe.”
