In Buryatia, a case was opened after waste from a pig farm entered the river

In the Zaigraevsky district of Buryatia, a criminal case has been initiated and is being investigated under Part 1 of Art. 250 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (water pollution). How reported press service of the prosecutor’s office of the republic, the case was initiated after waste from the East Siberian Pig Farm JSC (part of the Sibagro holding) got into the river.

“The prosecutor’s office checked the implementation of environmental legislation. It was established that the employees of the enterprise allowed the formation and accumulation of liquid animal waste and its leakage into the reservoir,” the report notes.

Previously, the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) declared on the order of the head of the department, Alexander Bastrykin, to the head of the Investigative Committee for Buryatia to initiate a criminal case on the facts of waste leakage. With reference to regional media and social networks, the Investigative Committee reported that waste from the pig farm entered the Uda River on October 12. At the same time, “the organization’s employees tried to hide the fact of pollution.” The Uda River flows into the Selenga River, which is a tributary of Lake Baikal. These rivers are also a source of drinking water for the population.
