The head of the consular department of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Argentina, Georgy Polin, said on Thursday that the Argentine migration service massively refuses Russian citizens to extend their tourist stay. According to Polin, negative decisions have been made in recent months to extend the so-called tourist stay for newly arrived Russians, as well as denials of residence permits and multiple orders to leave the country.
According to TASS, these actions of the migration service are justified by the provision of the Russian-Argentine agreement on visa-free travel, which provides for the possibility of entry, exit, transit and stay in Argentina without a visa for no more than 90 days during each period of 180 days for holders of ordinary Russian foreign passports. . During 2022, the migration service of Argentina satisfied most of the requests of Russian citizens to extend their tourist stay in the country, but now the situation has changed.
Polin points out that the non-discriminatory implementation of Argentine law provisions suggests that citizens of other countries that have a visa-free regime with Argentina should also be denied residence permits if the relevant bilateral or multilateral treaties contain similar provisions. However, in recent times, almost exclusively Russian citizens have become the object of refusals.
