The World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded a decline in tobacco consumption worldwide. In 2022, according to WHO estimates, about 1.25 billion people worldwide, or one in five adults on the planet, used tobacco. In 2000, 1.36 billion people, or every third person on the planet, consumed tobacco.
IN report, published on the WHO website, states that in 2000, 49.1% of men and 16.3% of women in the world used tobacco in one form or another. Since then, despite the development of the tobacco industry, tobacco use among the world population began to decline. According to WHO forecasts, if the intensity of measures to combat tobacco addiction continues, its prevalence will decrease to 32.9% in 2025 and to 30.6% by 2030.
According to the report, in 2022 the highest proportion of the population using tobacco was recorded in the Southeast Asia region – 26.5%. In the European Region, 25.3% of people used tobacco, and the rate of tobacco use among women in the European Region was more than twice the global average.
By the end of 2022, the prevalence of tobacco use had decreased in 150 countries. However, in six countries, such as Congo, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Oman and Moldova, tobacco consumption rates are still rising, WHO noted.
According to a VTsIOM survey published in July 2022, the share of smokers in Russia has remained unchanged for the last five years—a third of citizens (33%). According to Rosstat, in 2022 the number of smokers in the country decreased by 5.8%, to 22 million people. The most smoking regions in 2022 were the Altai Republic, Sakhalin and Magadan regions.
