Budapest currently sees no reason to rush to ratify Sweden’s application to join the North Atlantic Alliance. This statement was made on Monday, September 25, by the head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban.
The Hungarian politician noted that “we need to see if there is something urgent that will push us to ratify Sweden’s membership in NATO,” and also emphasized that he does not yet see such circumstances.
Orban expressed his conviction that now nothing threatens the security of Sweden, and therefore Hungary has no reason to rush into the process of admitting the country to the military-political bloc.
Earlier, the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, László Kövér, expressed doubts that Budapest should ratify Sweden’s application to the North Atlantic Alliancewhile Hungarian policies are criticized in schools in this country.
Ratify Sweden’s application for NATO membership Türkiye is in no hurry either. Ankara and Stockholm had serious disagreements over policies towards Kurdish organizations. Then the burning of the Koran in Stockholm, which the Turkish authorities considered an insult, added fuel to the fire.
