HRC member Merkacheva called for speeding up consideration of the bill on domestic violence

The number of crimes related to the tyranny of husbands is growing

HRC member Eva Merkacheva prepared an appeal to the Federation Council. She asks to pay attention to the worsening problem with domestic violence in Russia and to consider as soon as possible the bill “On the prevention of domestic violence in the Russian Federation,” which has long been developed in the Federation Council.

Human rights activists have analyzed a large number of requests from women that the number of victims of domestic violence in Russia has increased recently. A huge number of complaints that reach the police remain unanswered. Only after victims of domestic violence write repeated complaints (sometimes several times) and challenge the actions of the police in court, criminal proceedings are initiated. The investigation is progressing slowly. Often the only way out for a woman is to leave her place of residence with her child or to defend herself with such forces.

A large number of women convicted under Article 105 (murder) killed their husbands or partners. After talking with them, it turns out that many of them were victims of domestic violence themselves and did not know how to cope with what was happening. They did not know that there were any structures to which they could turn.

In this regard, human rights activists are asking to “reanimate” the bill on the prevention of domestic violence. This is especially important because in families where tyranny on the part of the husband ended in crime, children are often left without parental care – mom is in prison, dad is killed or incapacitated.
