How to calm your baby before bed

It turns out that cheerful music is the best way to help babies fall asleep.
Parents trying to find the right tune to put their child to bed may be looking for songs that are too calm and monotonous. However, fast, upbeat music gets babies to sleep more effectively than slow nursery rhymes, a British educational study found in an experiment involving nearly 100 babies under a week old. When cheerful music was turned on, the children’s heart rate dropped, and the children went from nap to sleep more quickly. Conversely, sadder, slower music had the least effect.
Dr Emese Nagy, who led the study at the University of Dundee, said: “These results suggest that the emotions behind a lullaby (…) may affect how well it helps a child fall asleep. Children have an innate response to music, even at such a young age.”
Previous studies of this kind have shown that lullabies of any type are better for sleep than silence, with babies more likely to close their eyes when listening to music.
