Golf, cheerleading, small towns and e-sports—schoolchildren will be able to practice these disciplines in physical education lessons. The innovations will come into force on September 1, according to the order of the Ministry of Education on changes in federal programs of general and secondary education. The document contains almost 1.2 thousand pages. It lists new training modules on work, physical education, literature, indigenous languages and so on. The biggest package of changes is planned for physical training programs.
For example, schools may have separate modules on golf, judo, biathlon and e-sports. How did your parents react to the innovations? Olga Letkova, chairman of the Association of Parental Committees and Communities, answered this question for Kommersant FM: “Of course, many parents will like the idea of having a choice for sports that are most interesting for children. But you need to understand that if parents choose some modules, the school will have to invite several physical education teachers for each sport.
There is currently no special training for teachers in the school education system. And there are questions about e-sports, because, as you know, computer games addict children, and then it’s impossible to get them out of there and force them to do their homework. Here you need to think, because if physical sports are really good for health, but there are questions about e-sports in this context.”
The department’s order, however, emphasizes that the specifics of the eSports module are combined with almost all basic sports. It will also help students prepare for passing the GTO standards. The innovations of the Ministry of Education have already been criticized by the “Communists of Russia”. The party sent a protest to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, RIA Novosti reported. However, this order is unlikely to have any impact on the life of schools, notes teacher, co-chairman of the board of the Interregional Trade Union of Education Workers “Teacher” Vsevolod Lukhovitsky:
“If a school does not have a golf course, no one can oblige it to conduct these classes. The Ministry of Education, as far as I understand, did not contact either the Ministry of Finance or the constituent entities to, for example, allocate any subsidies to finance all this. This means that each director will do something based on his capabilities. But no one can force a school to offer golf or rock climbing lessons if it does not have the capabilities to do so. Moreover, it will be a violation of all norms if rock climbing is taught without having the equipment for this.”
The Ministry of Education notes that golf is an effective means of physical education that promotes the comprehensive development of schoolchildren: from teaching them patriotism to instilling honesty. In addition, this sport disciplines and teaches self-control in stressful situations. In 2023, the Ministry of Education proposed adding a “playing rounders” module as part of physical education lessons. The discipline was even included in the department’s register of approximate basic general education programs. However, this sport was not included in the final version of the document.
