On the eve of Lent, which for Orthodox Christians this year will last from March 18 to May 4, a meeting is being held at the MK press center with the famous priest and church publicist Hieromonk Makariy Markish. He spoke about the main danger that awaits believers in the next seven weeks.
– The forms of fasting vary greatly from place to place, from era to era, and the greatest danger is to try to measure this diversity with one “yardstick”.
According to Fr. Macarius, Great Lent is older than monasticism as a phenomenon: the first monks appeared in the 4th century after the Nativity of Christ, and began to fast in apostolic times. Therefore, the variety of forms and types of fasting is determined historically, but the most important – prayerful – meaning of fasting is preserved.
